The History of Money
There haven’t always been coins and bills-money as we know it. In ancient times, people used objects to trade for things they needed. For example, 3.000 years before Christ, the Chinese were using knives and rice as money because these things were very valuable.
Then, in about 600 B.C., people started making coins out of gold, silver and other metals. That was in the area of Asia we now call Turkey and also in China. In about 390 B.C., the Romans built a mint for making coins.For hundreds of years, people only used coins, but coins were heavy, and it was dangerous to travel with a lot of gold and silver, so finally paper money was invented. The first paper money was used in China, around 810 A.D. Europeans started using it in about 1000 A.D. of course, not everyone had paper money or coins at that time. In 1600 A.D., Native Americans were still using beads and furs as money. In 1624, they traded the island of Manhattan to the Dutch for goods worth $24 at today`s value¡

No siempre han sido las monedas y billetes el dinero como lo conocemos. En tiempos antiguos, la gente usaba objetos para intercambiar por cosas que necesitaban. Por ejemplo, 3.000 años A.C., los chinos estaban usando cuchillos y arroz como dinero porque eran muy valorados.
Luego, en alrededor de 600 años D.C., la gente comenzó a hacer monedas de oro, plata y otros metales. Estos estaban en el área de Asia que conocemos ahora como Turquía y también China. En alrededor de 390 años A.C., los romanos construyeron un centro de acuñación para la creación de monedas.
Por cientos de años, la gente solo usaba monedas, pero las monedas eran pesadas, y esto era peligroso para viajar con un montón de oro y plata, así finalmente el dinero en papel fue inventado. El primer dinero en papel fue usado en China, alrededor de 810 años D.C. Los europeos lo comenzaron a usarlo alrededor de 1000 años D.C. por supuesto, no todos tenían dinero en papel o monedas en ese entonces. 1600 años D.C., los nativos americanos aún usaban perlas y pieles como dinero.
